Spirit (Advent III)

Person 1:

“The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.” (Isaiah 61)

Person 2:

Those words were spoken by the prophet Isaiah. When we use the same words it sounds pretentious. Who can say that the spirit of God is upon him or her? Who has the power to change the fate of people in poverty and prison?

Person 1:

Jesus used those words when he read from the sacred scroll in the synagogue of Nazareth. Then he said, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.

Person 2:

It sounded just as pretentious to the people in Nazareth when Jesus made that comment; they kicked him out. Yet, when spirit meets flesh, when God’s holy wind moves us, good news abound. People will be made whole.

Person 1:  John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus. He said: “I baptize with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

Person 2:

When spirit meets flesh, when God’s holy wind moves us, good news will abound, our world will be changed, our eyes will be opened.

Person 1:

When the spirit meets you, your body will be awakened, new possibilities arise. Prepare for Christ! So, prepare for the one who will awaken God’s spirit in you!

Person 2:

It is advent, people, prepare! It is time for the spirit to meet flesh.
