The Quote:

“You are educated. Your certification is in your degree. You may think of it as the ticket to the good life. Let me ask you to think of an alternative. Think of it as your ticket to change the world.” – Tom Brokaw

Wisdom from Scripture:

Acts 22: 17-21

When I returned to Jerusalem and was praying at the temple, I fell into a trance 18 and saw the Lord speaking to me. ‘Quick!’ he said. ‘Leave Jerusalem immediately, because the people here will not accept your testimony about me.’

19 “‘Lord,’ I replied, ‘these people know that I went from one synagogue to another to imprison and beat those who believe in you. 20 And when the blood of your martyr[a] Stephen was shed, I stood there giving my approval and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.’

21 “Then the Lord said to me, ‘Go; I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’”

Matthew 5: 14-16

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Comment:

In the passage from the Book of Acts, Paul recalls his conversion experience, how he was compromised in Jerusalem because of his reputation and how God entrusted him with an even greater mission to change the world.

Prayer:

God, when we think small, help us to think bigger! When we assume that for some reason, we can’t make a change in this world, change our minds first. When we want to focus on the comforts of our home alone, remind us of our calling as Christians: to reflect your light in this world.

Amen.
