Epiphany Call to Light

This Call to Worship was written for the season of Epiphany.  It brings up the darker aspects of life and sets them against the wisdom of psalm 119:105 and the proclamations of John 1:  the light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot be overcome it.

Call to the Light

P  In the beginning, God created the heavens and the  earth; it was a formless void and darkness covered the deep. And God said: “Let there be light!

C  And there was light.

P  In the dark moments, when we become painfully aware of our flaws and the shadows that surround us, God calls us into the illuminating presence of His Word.

C  Lord, your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

P  In the fog of life, when good and evil compete and when our future is put in doubt,  Saint John reminds us of the true power of God in Christ Jesus.

C  The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

P  Epiphany is the season of light. As we enter a new year and continue our life’s story, as we deal with challenges, pursue goals, fail or succeed, may we always know that Christ is our light.

C  Jesus said: I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. Amen.

Leader: Let us come together and sing a new song to the Lord!

People: We praise you with gospel and hymnody.
We recognize you in prayers and meditation.
We meet you in the most holy sacraments.
You are holy.

Leader: Let us recognize the miracles of creation! What science unveils, what research finds, the great wisdom of creation and its mysterious order, we give thanks to its author!

People: Words are not enough to describe you, Lord. Even songs can only hint at the grandeur of your presence. You are holy.

Leader: Let us bring an offering of thanksgiving and bless God in acts of compassion and service. Let us sing a new song to the Lord, a song that goes through our hands and feet, our minds and souls.

People: We praise you O Lord. May our songs hint at your glory and our prayers proceed to your heart. You are holy. Amen.
